This is a picture of my friend Ray who drank an entire bottle of Alize before having this portrait taken. It was shot on Fuji Provia 100 which is a beautiful color slide film but I scrapped the color because it didn't scan well. Anyway, you can see here how a little highpass retouching puts the pop back into a black and white image.
Maybe one day I'll get into doing tutorials, but in the meantime its basically: Ctrl+J (copy layer), Ctrl+U (HLS) desaturate - even for color images, Filter menu--> Highpass - experiment with the slider, set the Blending mode of the top layer to 'soft light' or 'hard light', tune down the top layer opacity a little bit, ( if you want to get fancy you can selectively apply the top layer using a mask ), Ctrl+E (merge layer down). Done.
